About this stop: Fast-but-balanced for first-timers.

Suggested itinerary

  • We stayed right by the esplanade and start each morning taking a peaceful stroll along the water. Be sure to stop for a coffee at Muddy's Cafe. Get breakfast at Yaya’s Hellenic Kitchen and Bar. Sit outside and take in the view.
  •  Setup an excursion with one of the companies by the harbor for the Great Barrier Reef. We went to Fitzroy island before heading to the reef. Fitzroy is a stunning island with hiking and other activites.  If you get a chance check it out.
  • Kuranda Scenic Railway. This is an awesome day trip that includes a historic 37-kilometer (23-mile) journey that climbs from Cairns to the mountaintop village of Kuranda. Highlights include winding through the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Wet Tropics Rainforest, crossing 55 dramatic bridges, passing through 15 hand-carved tunnels, and enjoying panoramic stops at the spectacular Barron Falls.
